Why AI Search Matters

Buyers now ask AI instead of Googling, and AI gives one answer, not ten links. Here is what that means for your brand.

AI search engines have changed how people find businesses. Instead of showing ten links and letting users choose, they write a direct answer. If your brand is not in that answer, there is no page two to rescue you.

Comparison of traditional search, which returns ten ranked links the user chooses from, with AI search, which returns a single written answer that names one or two businesses.

What you'll learn

  • How AI search differs from traditional Google search and why that gap is growing
  • Why your Google ranking no longer predicts your AI visibility
  • The commercial stakes: what you lose when you are absent from AI answers

Traditional search gave users ten blue links. They could scroll, compare, and click through. A brand on page two still had a chance. A brand on page one had ten competitors next to it.

AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI, Grok, Claude, and DeepSeek do something different. They read many sources, synthesise the information, and write a single answer in plain English. That answer might name one or two businesses. Sometimes it names none. The user reads the answer, gets what they need, and does not click anything. This is called a zero-click result.

For brands that rely on organic search traffic, zero-click is a direct revenue threat. If the AI answers the question without sending the user to your site, you lose the visit. More critically, if the AI names a competitor instead of you, you lose the sale.

Why Google ranking no longer predicts AI visibility

Many marketing teams assume that if they rank on page one of Google, they will also be cited by AI engines. The data does not support this assumption.

AI engines do not crawl and rank pages the way Google does. They synthesise information from training data, real-time retrieval, and trusted sources. A brand with a strong Google ranking can have a poor AI citation rate, and vice versa. The two signals measure different things.

The citation rate spread across the six engines Outercite tracks is significant. Perplexity cites brands in 58% of relevant checks. Google AI cites them in only 38% of checks. A brand could be well-cited on Perplexity and almost invisible on Google AI, with no correlation to its traditional SEO rankings.

AEO (answer engine optimisation) is the emerging practice of structuring content so AI engines are more likely to cite your brand in their answers. It is different from SEO. Outercite's recommendations are grounded in AEO principles. The glossary has a full definition.

The citation rate spread across six engines

The engines your customers use vary by persona and use case. A technical buyer might use Perplexity. A consumer might use ChatGPT or Google AI. Because citation rates differ so much by engine, tracking only one gives you a misleading picture.

The per-engine citation rates from Outercite's production data are currently:

EngineCitation rate
Perplexity58%
Grok53%
ChatGPT51%
Claude47%
DeepSeek42%
Google AI38%

A roughly 20-percentage-point spread between the strongest and weakest engine is an observation worth noting. A brand scoring well on Perplexity but poorly on ChatGPT may be missing a significant portion of the market.

The commercial stakes

Consider a business that sells cloud accounting software. A prospective buyer opens ChatGPT and asks "What is the best cloud accounting software for a small business?" ChatGPT names two products. Neither is yours. The buyer reads the recommendation, visits one of those products, and makes a decision. You were never in contention.

This scenario plays out millions of times a day across all six engines. The businesses that appear in those answers capture attention and consideration that never appears in any analytics report. There is no referral traffic, no bounce rate to measure. The opportunity is simply gone.

Tracking AI citations turns this invisible competition into measurable data. You can see which keywords trigger citations, which engines cite you, how your share of voice compares to competitors, and whether your citation rate is trending up or down.

Absence from AI answers is not always obvious. A business can have healthy Google traffic while quietly losing market consideration through AI search. The only way to know is to measure it.

Who is most exposed?

Any business where customers research before buying is exposed. This includes:

  • Local services: trades, healthcare, professional services. Buyers ask AI "who is the best [service] near me?" before they ask Google.
  • SaaS and software: buyers use AI to compare products and get shortlists.
  • Retail and e-commerce: customers ask "what is the best [product category] for [use case]?" and buy what the AI recommends.
  • B2B brands: procurement teams and consultants increasingly use AI to shortlist vendors.

The businesses most at risk are those whose customers have high buying intent and who ask AI engines comparison or recommendation questions. These are exactly the queries where a citation has the most commercial value.
