Build AI Search Visibility for a New Product
A playbook for taking a brand-new product from zero citations to a measurable baseline across all six AI engines.
When you launch a new product, AI search engines have never heard of it. This playbook gives you a clear sequence: set up keywords, establish a baseline, make the right content moves, and track the climb from zero to competitive.
What you'll learn
- Which keywords to add first and how to structure them for maximum intent coverage
- How to establish a citation baseline and interpret early data honestly
- The content and technical actions that accelerate AI engine discovery
Why new products start at zero
AI engines build their understanding of a product from multiple signals: website content, news mentions, reviews, structured data, and citations from other trusted sources. A new product has none of those. Until you build them, the six AI engines Outercite tracks (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI, Grok, and DeepSeek) will rarely cite it, even if the product is excellent.
The aggregate citation rate across all Outercite-tracked prompts is 48%. New products typically start well below that average. Reaching the platform average takes deliberate action over a period that varies with category and competitive intensity.
Step 1: Set up keywords before launch
Go to /prompts and add keywords before your product goes live. This gives Outercite time to run its first checks so you have a true Day 1 baseline, not a gap.
Structure your keyword list across all five intent types:
| Intent type | Example prompt |
|---|---|
| Branded | "[product name] review" |
| Buying intent | "best [product category] for [use case]" |
| Local | "[product name] available in [city]" |
| Comparison | "[product name] vs [competitor product]" |
| Informational | "how does [product type] work" |
Aim for at least ten prompts at launch. Add more as you learn which queries customers actually use.
Do not wait until you have "enough" prompts. Five well-chosen prompts on Day 1 are more valuable than twenty vague ones added six weeks later. You can always add more.
Step 2: Build your launch content foundation
AI engines need content to cite. Before or at launch, publish the following:
Core product page
- A clear, factual description of what the product does and who it is for
- Specific features, not vague claims ("reduces processing time by 40%" beats "fast and powerful")
- Pricing or a clear indication of how to get pricing
- FAQ section that directly answers the buying-intent and comparison prompts you added in Step 1
Structured data
Mark up your product page with Schema.org Product markup. Include name, description, brand, offers (price and currency), and aggregate rating if you have one. This is one of the strongest signals for Google AI, which sits at 38% citation rate and is the hardest engine to win.
Category page or blog post
Publish one piece of content that answers the informational intent prompts. For example, if your product is a payroll tool, publish "How payroll software works" and mention your product naturally within it. AI engines often cite category-level content for informational queries before they cite a product page directly.
Do not publish thin or AI-generated content at launch. High-quality factual content is more reliably cited. Publish less, but make it genuinely useful.
Step 3: Add competitors and set your baseline
Add competitors
Go to /competitors and add the products your new launch competes with. See Add a competitor for the steps. Outercite will start tracking share of voice so you can see whether you are growing relative to the field.
Read your Week 1 baseline
After your first week of data, open the Dashboard and note:
- Your citation rate per engine
- Your visibility score (likely low at this stage, that is normal)
- Which prompts have any citations at all (even one is a signal to build on)
- Which engine cited you first (often Perplexity, given its 58% citation rate)
Write these numbers down. You will compare against them each week.
A visibility score below 30 in the first two weeks is not a failure. It is your starting point. The goal is a clear upward trend, not an instant high score.
Step 4: Accelerate discovery
These actions drive faster AI engine indexing and citation:
Get third-party mentions early
Reach out to industry newsletters, bloggers, and review sites in your category. A single mention from a trusted source can trigger multiple AI engines to register your product. Press releases on reputable wires help too: ChatGPT and Grok pick up news content quickly.
Seed reviews
Ask early customers for reviews on Google, Trustpilot, or category-specific review sites. Review content feeds several AI engines and is especially important for buying-intent queries.
Build internal links
Link to your new product page from your highest-traffic existing pages. This passes authority signals to your new page and helps AI engines understand its importance within your site.
Post on owned channels
Publish about the product on your LinkedIn and social profiles. Grok draws on social signals. It is not the primary lever, but it costs nothing.
Step 5: Track the climb weekly
Each week for the first twelve weeks:
- Open the Dashboard and compare your current citation rate per engine to your Week 1 baseline.
- Note which prompts moved (gained citations) and which are still at zero.
- For zero-citation prompts after four weeks, revisit the content you have for that query. Is there a page that directly answers it?
- Check Predictions and forecasts to see if Outercite is projecting growth based on your trajectory.
With active content work, a healthy new product should show a clear upward trend in citation rate, gradually approaching the 48% platform average over time.
Success metric
You have completed this playbook when your product has citations on at least four of the six AI engines for your core buying-intent prompts, and your visibility score has risen for three consecutive weeks.
Try this in Outercite
Add your new product's prompts now, before or right at launch. The earlier you start, the more useful your baseline data will be.
