Connect Google Search Console

Link Google Search Console to Outercite to bring traditional search data alongside your AI citation results in one place.

Connecting Google Search Console (GSC) adds your traditional organic search performance to Outercite, so you can see AI citation trends and classic Google rankings side by side. This context helps you spot whether a drop in AI visibility is happening in isolation or is part of a broader search performance shift.

What you'll learn

  • Why GSC data adds value to your AI citation view
  • How to authorise the connection in Outercite
  • What data flows in and how it appears in the dashboard

Why connect GSC?

Outercite tracks six AI engines: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI, Grok, and DeepSeek. These engines handle a growing share of search, but traditional Google search still drives significant traffic for most businesses.

When you connect GSC, you get a richer picture:

  • Correlation view: See whether keywords where your AI citation rate is high also rank well in traditional search, or whether there is a gap to close.
  • Traffic context: A lost citation may not hurt traffic if you still rank #1 organically for that keyword. The combined view tells you which losses actually matter.
  • Content signal: Pages that rank well in Google but have low AI citation rates are often candidates for AEO (answer engine optimisation) improvements.

GSC data in Outercite is read-only. Outercite can see your impressions, clicks, and average position data, but cannot make changes to your Google account or Search Console settings.

Before you start

You need:

  • A Google account with Owner or Full User access to the GSC property you want to connect
  • The Outercite workspace where you want the data to appear (one GSC property per workspace)

If you manage multiple domains, connect the GSC property that matches the primary domain tracked in your Outercite workspace.

Step 1: Go to Integrations

  1. Log in to Outercite and open your Dashboard.
  2. Click Settings in the sidebar, then select Integrations.
  3. Find the Google Search Console card and click Connect.

Step 2: Authorise with Google

  1. Outercite redirects you to a Google authorisation screen.
  2. Sign in with the Google account that has access to your GSC property.
  3. Review the permissions. Outercite requests read-only access to Search Console data. It does not request access to other Google products.
  4. Click Allow.

You are redirected back to Outercite.

Step 3: Select the property

After authorisation, Outercite lists every GSC property your Google account can access.

  1. Select the property that matches your Outercite workspace domain (for example, https://www.yoursite.com.au).
  2. Click Confirm.

If the property you need does not appear in the list, check that the Google account you used has Owner or Full User access to that property in GSC. Restricted User access does not grant the permissions needed for data import.

Step 4: Wait for the initial sync

The first data sync brings in historical GSC data up to Google's API retention limit, typically around 16 months, though this is subject to Google's own policies. The import time varies depending on your site's query volume; a progress indicator on the Integrations screen shows the sync status. You will also receive an email when the initial import is complete.

What data flows in

After the sync, the following GSC data is available in Outercite:

MetricSourceWhere it appears
ClicksGSCKeyword performance table
ImpressionsGSCKeyword performance table
Average positionGSCKeyword performance table
Click-through rateCalculated from GSC clicks/impressionsKeyword performance table

Outercite matches GSC queries to your saved Outercite keywords where the text overlaps. Queries that do not match any saved keyword appear in a separate Unmatched GSC queries section, which can be a useful source of new keyword ideas.

How the combined view works

Once connected, the Keyword performance table in your dashboard shows both AI citation data and GSC data for each keyword on the same row. You can sort by any column, including AI citation rate or organic click volume.

A keyword with a high citation rate but low organic clicks might be winning AI visibility but not traditional ranking. That is a useful signal: AI engines are treating your brand as authoritative for that topic, but your Google ranking may still have room to grow.

Conversely, keywords with strong GSC clicks but low citation rates highlight gaps where AI engines are not yet picking up your content. These are often the highest-value AEO opportunities.

Keeping the connection healthy

  • GSC data syncs every 24 hours. There is typically a 2-3 day lag in GSC data due to Google's own processing pipeline.
  • If the connection breaks (for example, if you revoke access in your Google account), the Integrations screen will show a warning. Reconnect by clicking Reconnect on the GSC card.
  • Changing the GSC property connected to a workspace requires disconnecting and reconnecting. Historical imported data is cleared on disconnect.
